The tradition of exchanging gifts is not seen much in Japan. Instead, children "wish" their mothers with flowers considering it a token of love. Children draw pictures of their mothers in school and sometimes enter them in art contests.
It was in 1950 by Napoleon that the day was officially inaugurated for honoring Mothers. It is called Fête des Mères. In France, it usually is a family affair and mothers around the country are honored with poems, gifts, cards, and dinners.
