Really Going Green
"Let's pause to fully grasp within,
This sense of living green,
We hear this word so often said,
But what does this word mean?"
This is an excerpt from my latest book, "The ABCs of Living Green" and one that I'd like to elaborate on.
We've all been talking about going green, which for most people means recycling, composting and reducing our carbon footprint -- but I think it's more than that. I sincerely believe that the healing of the planet begins within each of us. Our thoughts, intentions and emotions affect the way we operate in the world and greatly influence the overall effect we make on Mother Earth.
To create a lasting positive impact on our planet, we need to project feelings of love, respect and true care for all living creatures, be they plant, animal or human.
I sincerely believe that the world is on the brink of great change. The kids and young adults of today are making the best possible footprint you could imagine. They may not yet be able to vote, but they sure have a voice. And it is strong. As I'm watching hundreds of thousands of students across the country come together to stand up and be heard about the need to eradicate gun violence, I am filled with a sense of optimism that we are on our way to embracing the deeper meaning of living green. I see a spiritually evolved and emotionally intelligent generation that personifies the change that we all wish to see in the world.
This is a sign of what's to come – a sign that our future leaders not only feel a sense of responsibility toward humanity, but also have the ability and conviction to follow it through. I have no doubt that this generation and the ones to come are going to protect each other and our planet. And I for one am thrilled.
So yes, being green means being mindful of our footprints – but our footprints are also created when stepping up and stepping toward the betterment of all.
And from where I stand, this journey has clearly begun...
